Interesting I did not know that. I think Portland would be a bit tough for that size of a city that already has a basketball team. Most cities have either an NHL or NBA team, only the biggest metropolitan areas in the US have both:

1. Boston
2. New York
3. Philadelphia
4. Washington DC
5. South Florida (Heat play in Miami and Panthers play in Sunrise near Fort Lauderdale)
6. Minnesota
7. Chicago
8. Detroit
9. Dallas
10. Phoenix
11. SF Bay area (Warriors in Oakland and Sharks in San Jose)
12. Los Angeles

Those are more or less the 12 largest metro areas in the USA. Portland is around #25.

The fact that the Pens traded a 2020 2nd round pick indicates that Vegas' first choice was not MAF. It was almost certainly Bryan Rust. Or at a minimum they bluffed the Pens into thinking it was Rust.

Neal, James - 1, didn't really have much doubt, considered Sissons
Kulemin, Nikolai - Never thought about Berube
Eakin, Cody - 2, figured if the Lehtonen rumours had legs, it'd be a trade.
Perron, David - 3, didn't see much else there
Stempniak, Lee - Wasn't on my radar at all
Raffl, Michael - PEB was my second to last choice, fuckers
Lewis, Trevor - lightly considered McNabb
Karlsson, William - 4 Was him or Calvert. Got it.
Rychel, Kerby - Loosely considered Leipsic, but I don't think he was my backup.
Dano, Marko - Had no read on Thorburn
Marchessault, Jonathan - 5, kept hedging this, but couldn't find another I liked.
Carrier, William - 6, was him or the goalie. Figured he was enticement.
Khaira, Jujhar - Actually wanted Reinhart, but needed another F. Bastards.
Gaunce, Brendan - Sbisa was my backup, but, needed another F.
Haula, Erik - 7, got this one out of the early leak this morning. Couldn't figure the Dumba leak.
DEFENSE (11)
Methot, Marc - 8, fuck Methot, whiny little bitch. I may have considered someone else, but barely. Never thought Ryan.
Garrison, Jason - 9, once the news came on protecting the young D, figured this was set
Emelin, Alexei - 10, I actually had this as someone else until the D report came out. Can't recall which forward it was though.
Dillon, Brenden - Schlemko was my other coinflip. Cunts.
Stoner, Clayton - 11, seemed obvious with the deals.
Merrill, Jon - 12, one of my last guesses. Just couldn't see them taking on Bennett or Cammy.
Miller, Colin - 13, never bought the Subban hype. Didn't really have much else.
Connauton, Kevin - Never had a read on the Yotes. In hindsight, I guess I should have made this as one of my Fs instead of switching VAN & EDM.
Van Riemsdyk, Trevor - 14, only surprise was the Hossa thing
Kulak, Brett - Yeah, Deryk Engelland, what the fuck.
Schmidt, Nate - 15, a late breaker yesterday because of the D report.
GOALTENDERS (4)
Fleury, Marc-Andre - 16, this was in the bag. Only surprising bit was the 2020 2nd. Strange.
Mrazek, Petr - no thought to NoSack.
Raanta, Antti - I had Lindbergh in my 2nd tier, but it'd have been Grabner if not Raanta.
Pickard, Calvin - 17, Colorado had shit all else.

scuttlebutt indicates that the deal happened in February when Fleury was playing very poorly, so JR paid GM to take Fleury (Fleury didn't want to waive for Calgary). I'm sure McPhee knew someone he liked was going to be available, but I don't think it was Rust specific.

Of course then Fleury turns it on out of nowhere.

im taking credit for 5, because james neal was the first name i put down, and i mustve accidently copy and pasted over it. and thus, with those 5... it was 5 more than i expected to get. go me!

hockey is still a lame sport. though their playoffs were considerably better than the nbas this year.

Are you saying scuttlebutt is saying that this deal to give up a 2020 2nd-rounder for VGK to take Fleury was decided back in February?

I wonder if it's possible that part of that 2nd rounder had to do with receiving assurances that Vegas wouldn't turn around and trade him to Buffalo now that Jason Botterill is GM
